Citico Creek will soon be cleaner.

WaterWays, a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring streams, creeks, and rivers, has installed a litter trap to protect against pollution.

Back in May 2023, they placed a “litter boom” in the Chattanooga Creek. Since then, they’ve collected 5,600 pounds of floating debris.

Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly announced the second creek-cleaner’s installation online on Wednesday, March 26.

“Chattanooga’s natural beauty is part of who we are, and sustainability is in our DNA.”

WaterWays partnered with the Osprey Initiative and WildOnes to bring the second litter boom to life.

“This second installation is a testament to what’s possible through public-private collaboration, and we remain committed to long-term solutions for cleaner streets, streams, and rivers,” Mayor Kelly said.

What We Offer

The patented Litter Gitter is a tactical in-stream litter collection device used to intercept floating litter from stormwater runoff. The Osprey team handles all aspects of installing and maintaining these “trash traps” and compiles data on the items caught in them, recycling as much of the litter as possible.
