Floating Litter Boom Launched on Citico Creek for World Water Day

CHATTANOOGA,TN (WDEF) In honor of World Water Day, community leaders gathered today to launch a floating litter boom on Citico Creek, aimed at trapping trash before it harms the environment.

Mary Beth Sutton, founder of WaterWays, highlighted the project’s unifying impact, saying, “This brings us all together—fishermen, kayakers, and everyone who needs clean water. It’s something we can celebrate.”

The project, in development for 18 months, involved collaboration between local officials and organizations. James Breedwell, superintendent of Tennessee Riverpark, explained, “We’re working to protect our river systems and make everything as safe as possible.”

The Osprey Initiative will monitor the boom for six months, tracking collected litter to help reduce waste at its source. This project marks a significant step toward protecting local water systems and keeping Citico Creek clean.
